Dixie National Forest, Utah’s largest national forest, spans nearly two million acres across southern Utah and borders Scenic Byway 12 through the Powell, Escalante, and Teasdale ranger districts. The forest provides much of the byway’s stunning alpine scenery, including the 11,322-foot summit of Blue Bell Knoll on Boulder Mountain, and offers abundant recreation such as hiking, biking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, ATV use, snowmobiling, and more.

Cedar Breaks National Monument
A colorful amphitheatre eroded out of the edge of the Markagaunt Plateau in southern Utah, Cedar Breaks is at 10,000 feet above sea level and over 2,000 feet deep.

Start your visit at the Cedar Breaks Visitor Center! Here, you can talk with a ranger, pay your entrance fee, pick up a Junior Ranger activity booklet, buy a park pass, browse the gift shop, and get a new stamp for your park passport. Just up the path from the Visitor Center is a historic log cabin built in 1937. Once used as our Information Center, this building now features a self-guided display about the people who have called this area home. Stop in and explore the human history of Cedar Breaks!

The overlook faces directly west and is a favorite of plein-air artists. The Civilian Conservation Corps camp was located near this overlook during the 1930s when they constructed many of the visitor facilities and amenities in the park today.

Overlooking Chessmen Ridge, this overlook is centrally located on the rim overlooking the Cedar Breaks Amphitheater. It is the highest elevation overlook in the park at 10,461ft and offers stunning views of the ridge and surrounding formations. The overlook features one of the larger parking lots and can be used to access a bristlecone pine grove and the Alpine Pond Loop Trail by the Chessmen Ridge Spur Trail beginning at the overlook parking lot.

This loop trail forms a figure-eight through forest and meadows. There are multiple ways to experience this trail. Starting at the trailhead, you can start on the lower trail for excellent views of the amphitheater or the upper trail for views of meadows of native wildflowers, spruce-fir-aspen forest, and ancient deposits of volcanic materials. The lower trail also leads to Alpine Pond, just after the pond, you may choose to take the cut-off connecting to the upper trail to return to the trailhead (one-mile round trip option) or continue on the lower trail till in connects with the upper trail and then return to the trailhead (two-miles round trip option).
